Message from the Executive Director, Dr. A.V. Fleming – 1st quarter 2025

Greetings Dear Members and Supporters,

As the esteemed civil rights activist and educator Booker T. Washington profoundly reminded us, “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.” Indeed, it is through challenges that we find our greatest opportunities for growth and innovation.

As we navigate through 2025, the Retail Automotive Industry has never been more fiercely competitive or faced more rigorous trials. Dealerships continue to confront numerous pressures, including shifting market dynamics, elevating consumer expectations, and technological advancements reshaping the industry’s landscape. One of our most pressing challenges remains recruiting and retaining skilled, committed personnel, particularly as our industry notably compensates for the above national average salaries, positioning dealership employees among the top earners in their communities.

Despite higher salaries, attracting and maintaining skilled professionals, especially technicians—remains an ongoing battle. Technicians, the backbone of our dealerships, frequently find lucrative opportunities in other sectors, intensifying the talent acquisition struggle.

On the consumer side, we recognize a rising concern as individuals grapple with historically soaring prices for new automobiles. Inflationary pressures continue to add layers of anxiety, with buyers worrying that prices may climb even further beyond their reach. These combined economic stresses contribute to consumer hesitancy and apprehension about making large purchases, directly impacting dealership revenues.

Yet, amidst these headwinds, dealers who remain steadfast and resilient continue to find significant opportunities. These dealership owners and operators have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to weather the storms of economic uncertainty, emerging stronger and better positioned for the future. Ford minority dealers, in particular, continue to exemplify a remarkable capacity to adapt, innovate, and thrive—demonstrating unequivocally that the rewards of remaining in the industry outweigh the inherent risks.

Sound management principles and the exchange of best practices among our members are instrumental in equipping dealerships with the essential tools needed for success. As a collective, we benefit immensely from sharing our experiences, strategies, and innovative solutions.

In support of our ongoing collective commitment to excellence, collaboration, and growth, we invite you to join us at our Annual Conference. This year’s event will be hosted at the magnificent Breakers Hotel and Resort in Palm Beach, Florida, scheduled for June 19th through June 21st. The conference will be a pivotal opportunity to collectively address and minimize existing difficulties, share insightful strategies, and uncover new opportunities to further strengthen our dealership businesses.

Our collective gathering in Palm Beach will help ensure that every participant departs better prepared, informed, and inspired to successfully navigate the evolving landscape of the automotive industry. Your presence, ideas, and contributions are invaluable as we strive together towards greater success and sustainability.

In 2025 and beyond, it is our goal to continue improving tools and resources for you to be profitable. Further, we want to continue the momentum we harnessed over the years. We pray that you and your families are safe during these challenging times. Also, your employees, their families, and friends are safe as well.

Best Regards,

Dr. A.V. Fleming
Executive Director
